ISBP 821
The International Standard Banking Practice (ISBP 821) is the 2023 revision of the ICC's detailed guidance on how banks examine documents presented under UCP 600. It replaces the previous edition, ISBP 745 (2013), and incorporates all ICC Banking Commission Opinions issued since then.
What changed from ISBP 745
ISBP 821 aligns the standard with ICC Opinions approved between 2013 and 2023. Key updates include clarifications on credit reference numbers, administrative conditions in credits, abbreviations, and invoice requirements.
- Preliminary Consideration viii — Typographical errors or missing LC reference numbers do not automatically constitute a discrepancy if they do not create ambiguity.
- Preliminary Consideration ix — Administrative conditions (such as requirements about staples, photocopies, or number of originals) cannot be used as grounds for refusal.
- Updated guidance on abbreviations and their acceptance in documents.
- Clarified requirements for commercial invoices, transport documents, and insurance certificates.
Why it matters for exporters
ISBP provides the detail that UCP 600 leaves to practice. Where UCP 600 says a document must be “consistent” with the credit, ISBP explains what “consistent” means in practice for each document type. Knowing these rules reduces discrepancy rates and prevents unnecessary bank rejections.
How SmartLC uses ISBP 821
SmartLC's checking engine applies ISBP 821 paragraph-level rules alongside UCP 600 articles. When a flag is raised, the platform references the specific ISBP paragraph so you can see exactly which banking practice standard applies.
